Why Cologne?
Cologne, the beating heart of the Rhineland
Cologne is a city full of charm, scent, and celebration. It's the proud home of 4711, the world-famous "Kölnisch Wasser" (Eau de Cologne), whose fresh citrusy fragrance has been delighting people since the 18th century. Just as iconic is the local beer, Kölsch – light, crisp, and always served in small glasses by traditional waiters known as Köbes, who keep the beer flowing until you cover your glass with a coaster. These lively breweries also serve hearty local dishes like Himmel un Ääd (mashed potatoes with apple sauce and black pudding) or Halver Hahn (rye roll with cheese). And if you visit during Carnival season (usually in February), you’ll find yourself swept up in the wild joy of the Cologne Carnival – one of the largest and most colorful street parades in Europe, where the whole city turns into a cheerful, costume-filled celebration of life.

Top 3 Kölsch Breweries in Cologne
1. Früh am Dom
Probably the most iconic brewery in Cologne – just steps from the cathedral. This place is always buzzing with locals and tourists alike.
Address:
Am Hof 12–18, 50667 Cologne
Fun Fact
The entire brewery stretches across five historic buildings near the cathedral. Rumor has it, a secret underground tunnel once connected Früh with the Kölner Dom – perfect for priests sneaking in for a Kölsch between services.
2. Päffgen
A timeless classic cherished by true Kölsch lovers. This family-run brewery has been pouring beer since 1883 – and not much has changed since.
Address:
Friesenstraße 64–66, 50670 Cologne
Fun Fact
At Päffgen, Kölsch is still brewed on-site in copper kettles from the early 1900s. The beer never travels far – it goes straight from the cellar to your glass, often within hours of being brewed.
3. Lommerzheim ("Lommi")
A true Cologne institution. This no-nonsense Brauhaus serves giant pork chops and Kölsch in a wood-paneled room full of character.
Address:
Siegfriedstraße 18, 50679 Cologne (Deutz)
Fun Fact
Mr. Lommi, the legendary Brauhaus owner, once turned down a request to reserve the place for U.S. President Bill Clinton during the 1999 G8 summit – because he didn’t want to kick out his regulars. That’s Cologne pride at its finest.
